Herbie

My uncle, Herbie, is about to turn 60.  My task was to make him a Herbie Love Bug car cake.  Here it is…

I learned a lot from this cake.  I was too timid in my cutting, so it was a little square and lumpy…but once the fondant is on, there is no going back.  I really had a LOT of fun with the details…they take a long time, but they make the cake.

Spiritual Warfare

I love Christmas!  Obviously first and foremost I love Christmas because of what it is.  Christmas is nothing less than the birth of my Lord and Savior.  Without His perfect and precious birth, we would be nothing.  Without His life begun, He could not have laid down His life for my sins and there would be no hope in this world.  We are nothing, there is nothing, there would be nothing to have faith in or hope for…without Him we would all be sentenced to eternal death.  Not only did He do all of that for me and you, but He has showered me with blessings of life, love, family, food, shelter…and on and on.   I also love Christmas because, as you all know by now, I adore being with family and friends.  I enjoy gathering around sharing food and fun memories while making new memories.  It is a special time filled with traditions.

The enemy does not love Christmas.  In fact, He knows that we are saved because of the birth of Jesus Christ.  I think that is why there is so much pain at Christmas sometimes.  He attacks people at their weakest at a time when they are praising the One who saved them.  He attacks and tries to turn their vulnerability into a reason to distrust God.  This is when we need God the most!  He will not let us falter, He will not let us down, He does walk through every joy and every sorrow with us.

Hanging the ornaments on our Christmas tree each year is bittersweet.  There are ornaments that were meant for Joshua.  There are ornaments from people that are no longer here…that died too young.  There are bitter memories along with sweet ones.  My parents just attended a funeral of a great man who was attacked by cancer.  His family knows beyond a shadow of a doubt that he is celebrating Christmas with his Savior this year, but each Christmas will have a scar as they remember the husband, father, brother and friend that they lost.  My friend just was served divorce papers this week, a friend who has done nothing but try to save her marriage as her spouse has thrown it away.  Another friend is facing her third Christmas without her husband at home.  Life is tough and it seems to get harder at the times when we think we should be untouchable. Satan may attack, he may even win a few battles, but we know that the Lord is the ultimate victor.  We know the end and He has already won.  Don’t lose hope, don’t lose faith, put your trust in the One who is with you each step of the way.  Celebrate Christmas and have joy in the Lord!

HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY!

No matter what love, relationship, friendship you are celebrating or avoiding today…no love…NONE…is greater than that of your Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

He loves you (and me) despite our enormous daily screw ups.  He is perfection and we are so far from even thinking about being perfect.  And yet He loves us.  And yet He forgives us.  And yet He DIED for us.

Love Him, accept Him, live for Him!

Romans 5:8 but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

Decorating

I had so much fun preparing for our family Christmas this year!  One twist I did for place settings was to make a favor with the guests name on it and place it on the plate.  So each person had a favor and a “place card”, so to speak.  The favor was a jar of cookie mix.  Cowboy chocolate chip for the guys and either M&M or pecan muffin mix for the ladies.  I ran out of jars and WalMart did as well, but they had cute Christmas tree ones, so some people had those instead.  I liked them all and really enjoyed making them.  🙂

I also wanted to post a picture of Joshua’s park since I told you we would make it festive.  🙂

Bittersweet

Today is a special day for many women across the globe.  A day where they can either celebrate their mothers or their children…in some cases both.  Sadly, for some, it is neither.  My prayer for those women is that they know how special they are, how loved they are, and how important they are to the people close to them and to their Lord and Savior.

Today is a special day for me.  My mom is the greatest.  She is such an example of a Proverbs 31 woman.  She works hard, gives much, sacrifices, loves, is patient and has a love for the Lord.  She is pretty perfect when it comes to moms.  Today is a day I can celebrate her and how blessed I am to have her in my life.

I am doubly blessed in that I also get to celebrate my children.  My 4 children.  Today is a bittersweet day for me.  I have so so so so so much to be grateful for…a great mom, other great women in my life (grandmas, aunts, sisters, cousins, nieces, friends), and children that melt my heart.  (I have great men in my life, too, just am focusing on women today)  It is also a day that hurts my heart.  I miss my Joshua…every day, but today hits harder than most.  We will be going to the cemetery (or Joshua’s Park as we call it) as we do every Mother’s Day to make sure his area is the most decorated in the cemetery.  We will go through the explanations again as to why we are there when he is not, why we leave him presents that he can’t play with, and why sometimes we are sad even though he is in the best place he could ever be.  These topics are difficult for adults to make sense of, but the kids grew up with their brother in Heaven and have accepted it in their own way…they make sense of it in their own way…sometimes I think they understand it more than we do.

My day will be happy, too, because I can just hang out with my kids.  My oldest son at home with us is a miracle.  We put a lot of effort into getting him home…all of it worth it for sure.  He has a giant heart and a lot of love!  He loves God and people.  He is great!  My daughter is close to Jesus.  She loves to learn, is super smart and is good at caring for others.  My youngest is a bit of a goofball.  He also loves Jesus and cuddles and life.  He is in a testing phase right now, but we love him anyway.   All our miracles are truly miracles, none arrived easily, and each is a tremendous blessing.  I am grateful for my children even when they push their limits….I am blessed to have children to hug and scold and discipline and teach and LOVE.

For all those who are saddened today…you are in prayer.  For all of those who have reason to celebrate, let those loved ones know how blessed you are that they are in your life.  And for everyone…enjoy a beautiful Sunday…a gift from God.

Happy Mother’s Day!
